The owner´s comments
El Traspatio was totally rebuilt and renovated at the beginning of this century to be used in rural tourism, using the old house that belonged to our family, and which was originally built in the 19th century.

It is divided into three large apartments or independent accommodations, all fully equipped, and each accommodation has its own entrance from the street, a lounge-dining room, kitchen, bathroom and a double room in each apartment. The only spaces that its shares with other possible guests are the gardened patios, which have all the necessary garden furniture to guarantee the lovely shade of the large Canary Island palm trees, the singing of the birds that nest here year after year, as well as being the ideal place for reading or watching the sky full of stars on a warm pleasant evening.

The street, called Arquitecto Marrero, where we find the house at No. 9, is quite central and large, but very peaceful, as it is a pedestrian area and does not have any shops or that many people. The street starts just 60 metres away in the square, with the Franciscan convent of San Luis, which dates back to the 17th-century and which was rebuilt in the 18th-century after a fire.. It is a BIC (which in Spanish means an Island Listed Building of Cultural Interest), and has been recently restored and converted into a large building for cultural purposes, with a library, studios and exhibitions, cybercafe, etc. This square is also home to the new Town Hall.

On the other side of the street, we find the small municipal museum and in the first side street, the mother church of San Antonio de Papua (which is also an Island Listed Building of Cultural Interest), and hence, in the surrounding area we find numerous examples of traditional Canary Island architecture, which are protected by the state for being models of our past, which were taken to different American latitudes in the long history of Canary Islands emigration to the new continent.

Granadilla offers all the necessary services for a unique, pleasant and very safe stay, as you are bound to discover throughout this area of the island, and although it has a population of 7,500 people, it is ideal for its peaceful and quiet lifestyle, away from all the hustle and bustle of the more conventional and artificial resorts on the coast, and at the same time ideally linked to travel from here to any part of the island, whether it is the beaches, the mountains or the towns and villages.

Activities
  • The beaches in the municipality of Granadilla are: El Médano, La Tejita, Pelada and El Cabezo.
These are the best natural beaches on the island, if we do not count the artificial ones. They are located 10 km from the house and are perfect for swimming (La Tejita is practically untouched but it is somewhat dangerous). With its sea breeze, these are the best ones for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Surrounded by scenic beauty, lands where Christopher Columbus once ventured, and where Magallanes dropped anchor to obtain freshwater, with its many restaurants offering traditional and international cuisine (Los Abrigos offers the largest number of excellent fish restaurants), together with the carefully looked after wooden and stone paths, will invite you to enjoy a lovely dinner under a magnificent starry night.
  • The mountains provide several different alternatives in the heart of nature , anything from hiking along the many interesting signposted routes, canyoning, climbing, staying overnight in the Teide shelter to go up to the crater on foot, or simply going up in the cable car. There are specialised companies with guides and experts for all these outdoor activities in Granadilla, next to the church.
  • Cultural and/or urban visits to neighbouring towns and villages in the South, such as Vilaflor, San Miguel, Arona, Adeje or Arico, which are a complete contrast from others that we can recommend in the North of the island, such as Garachico, Icod, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna (a World Heritage town) the ancient capital not only of the island but of the whole archipelago. We also have the capital Santa Cruz, with its park, promenades, the Castillo Street or its museums.
  • Alternative activities , these are located in the local area and range from the Golf courses, 13 km away, to the theme parks of Acualand and Águilas del Teide, or the trips to visit the whales and dolphins or even take a boat trip to La Palma, La Gomera or El Hierro, in the port and beach of Playa Los Cristianos, 22 km away, where, you can also find one of the best offers of a conventional leisure resort.
  • The gastronomy and wine offer of the area is quite extensive, varied and rich, with budgets to suit everyone’s pocket. We are located in the heart of the wine area with its own Denomination of Origin “Abona”, the winner of several prizes in the many competitions in which it has participated in the last few years, such as the Zarcillos or in Bordeaux.
Interesting Places
  • The actual centre of Granadilla and its bordering villages, as found in the previous section, offer a very pleasant area to walk, passing some very typical spots and houses that still preserve much of the flavour of the island´s history.
  • Las Cañadas del Teide. From El Traspatio, the best way to go up the mountain is through Vilaflor, which is 16 km away, and then another 16 km to enter the Las Cañadas del Teide, which is overlooked by in the magnificent mass of the Teide.
  • Pinares like Vilaflor, where we find examples of ancient trees such as the Dos Pernadas or the Pino Gordo, which are many hundreds of years old and with a circumference of more than 10 m. The lunar scenery. El Barranco del Infierno (Hell’s Gorge). The cliffs of Los Gigantes or Candelaria with its Basilica, are all places of unique beauty located in the South of the island.
  • In the northern part of the island we find Garachico, with its streets that bring up scenes of pirate films, Icod, with its thousand year-old Drago or the square called La Pila, La Orotava a stately village with its houses and balconies, the Puerto de La Cruz, very cosmopolitan and always friendly, where you must visit the El Loro Parque, and also the Charco Square or the San Telmo promenade.
  • The metropolitan area (for us), in other words: the capital Santa Cruz , with the García Sanabria Park, Las Ramblas, the Castillo street, the Plaza de España or the Príncipe square. But probably the best place for me is La Laguna, with four central parallel streets and its side streets: Herradores, La Carrera, San Agustín and Anchieta. Although it could be looked after a lot better, it still has the title of World Heritage Town, for its non-walled and medieval centre and the architectural typology which was exported to America.
  • Anaga is the district that makes up the northern part of the island, abounding in the typical Laurisilva vegetation from the tertiary era, with its country houses clinging to the mountains, that form a part of the Protected Nature Reserve, the ideal place to go on trips by car or on foot. There is a visitor´s information centre in Cruz del Carmen, and its most well-known country houses and villages are: Taganana, with its beach (a little dangerous for swimming), Afur, Carboneras, Chinamada or El Batán.
  • Teno is another Protected Nature Reserve which is on the opposite slopes of the northwest, where you can see the Monte del Agua from Laurisilva, as well as the cliff plateau of Teno Alto, the Palmar Valley or the Caserío de Masca.

  5.00  by: Juan Carlos y Mai ,  11/Jul/2005
Juan Carlos y Mai.
