The owner´s comments
In 2000, Resu and Johannes bought a 250-year-old farmhouse nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Alhamilla Mountains in the Huebro Valley, above Níjar, a town of craftsmen, and next to the entrance to a fascinating ravine, which leads to the small town of Huebro via the Ribera de los Molinos. They lovingly converted the farmhouse, with its farm implement storeroom, dovecote, drying shed and straw loft, into a charming small hotel with eight bedrooms.. The result is an architectural merger inspired by the style of Al Andalus.
Every last little detail of the previous architecture has been conserved to regain the farm’s original character.
Within the 7,000 square metre estate, the distribution is reminiscent of a small village, full of fruit trees and many beautiful spots, each with their own charm. Water is an essential element, since its murmur can be heard everywhere as it pours through fountain spouts, drinking troughs and channels, and especially as it fills the central feature of our large terrace, the alberca, or pool, which our house is named after. Here, between March and December, our guests can enjoy their breakfast, sunbathe, read and take a dip in the pool or simply day dream surrounded by tall mountains with spectacular views.
At night our small hotel, with its terraces, fountains, pool and almost mystical lighting, invites you to look up at the sea of stars in the sky and dream the night away.
All the rooms have solar-powered radiant floor heating. In summer, cross ventilation and bioclimatic construction, both inspired by the architecture of the former settlers from North Africa, guarantee a cool environment in the rooms. All the rooms have a complete bathroom and independent terrace.
In the main house, which is the oldest part, there is a dining room and lounge with a fireplace where we serve our guests breakfast in winter. There is also a very cosy place to chat, have a drink or simply to relax in front of the fireplace.

Interesting Places
Location: Cortijo La Alberca, in a secluded spot in the countryside, is one kilometre from the Church and the Town hall of Níjar, so the town is within walking distance (10 minutes). Níjar is close to the Mediterranean Highway, 27 kilometres from Almeria in the direction of Murcia. The marvellous unspoilt beaches of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park are a thirty-minute drive away and Granada can be reached by car in 90 minutes.
Nature lovers will find a virtually wild and unspoilt refuge here. The area is ideal for birdwatchers and nature lovers in general.. The Ribera de los Molinos starts at our estate to then enter the ravine of the Rambla de Huebro.. You will come across the most important small-scale hydraulic works in Spain along the four-kilometre route of the Ribera de los Molinos, which leads to the small town of Huebro: the remains of 22 old watermills. There is a variety of paths and tracks throughout the Sierra Alhamilla Mountains.. Some lead to old mining towns, nowadays abandoned, others to solitary estates or the Sierra Alhamilla spa, whose thermal waters were appreciated long ago by the Romans and then by the Arabs.
Níjar, founded in the 13th century by the Arabs, has always been a town of craftsmen. Ceramics, jarapas (rugs made from strips of old fabric) and esparto products are still made in the traditional manner. We offer our guests guided visits to the craftsmen’s workshops.
There is also the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. We can provide you with information about the area.
After you arrive at the town hall crossing in the town of Níjar, follow the sign for Huebro.
The distance from the town hall crossing to the entrance to our estate is exactly 1 km.
The entrance is marked by a sign stating “Hotel Rural” on the left of the road.
After you have gone through the gate, you have to keep driving until you see the sign “Cortijo La Alberca”, which is underneath an enormous carob tree that is around 500 years old.
