On the top two floors we have:
- 5 large double rooms: one with a double bed and the others with twin beds, with anything from 12m² for the smallest to 17m² for the largest rooms, each with its en-suite bathroom.
- In the largest rooms, there is a possibility of an extra bed if necessary.
We have alarge 38 m² lounge-dining room for the use of our guests.
It also includes a sitting room equipped with comfortable sofas.
There are also two large balconies with wonderful views of La Tesla and La Canaleja mountains. One of the balconies is accessed from one of the rooms and the other from the lounge.
Outside , one finds a carefully looked after garden, which is ideal for the younger members of the family.

The house is a part of the buildings that were once an ancient stately home complex, dating back to 1856.. It has been restored in order to improve the accommodation facilities but still preserves the original structure and materials. We are located in Cigüenza, a village with a population of only 120 people, surrounded by the mountains of La Tesla and La Canaleja and by the River Nela, engulfed in peace and tranquillity. The house has one peculiar aspect, as in all the Moorish style houses, which is that the main facade faces the inside, towards the courtyard of the house, and not towards the outside, the access road, which would be the normal construction in this area.
The village is only 1.5 km from Villarcayo, the capital of the Las Merindades (4500 inhabitants); in the very centre of Las Merindades district, which enables us to visit all the different sights of the area easily and without having to travel long distances.
Winter arrives and it brings with it the cold, rain and snow. The days are shorter and we find it more difficult to venture outside.. But the rain and snow bring water to our rivers, and the many waterfalls found in the area are then in full splendour and offer us a wonderful picture, which can only be experienced at this time of year. We will also be able to enjoy the snow in the nearby Lunada ski resort, only 25 km away. It is small but ideal for complete families and the unexperienced. And later, after dinner, a lovely chat in front of the cosy fireplace or the heating while the wintry weather beats away outside.
To reach us from Bilbao:
- Take the C 6318 minor road towards Balmaseda
- You then go into the Merindades through the Mena Valley.
If you are coming from Santander:
- Take the N-1011 road through the Escudo mountain pass, and enter the area through the Valdebezana Valley.
- Or also along the N 629 road, through the Tornos Mountain Pass, coming in through the area of Espinosa de los Monteros.
To enter the Merindades from Vitoria:
- Take the BU530 road, through the Sobrón reservoir district, and come in through the Tobalina Valley.
If we are coming to Las Merindades from Logroño:
- Follow the N-232
- Then the N-629 as far as Medina de Pomar, through Bureba until you get to Oña.
And if we are coming from Burgos:
- Take the C629 minor road through the Masa moors
- Coming into the area through Los Altos.

Hemos pasados el ultimo puente de San Isidro, en esta estupenda casa y hemos quedado encantados. La casa esta muy limpia y cuidada. Los desayunos abundantes, pero sobre todo el trato de Sonia, que es muy amable, y te orienta muy bien sobre rutas que puedes hacer por los alrededores. La casa está muy bien situada para conocer esa desconocida pero preciosa zona de nuestro pais que son las Merindades. Anímo a todos a conocerla. Volveremos. Un Saludo Sonia.
No puedo opinar con respecto a las demas casas, ya que solo he tenido el placer de conocer la de Sonia, pero si decir de esta que nos hemos sentido como en la nuestra propia. Es maravilloso estar en lugar desconocido y sentirte como en tu casa. El trato, la limpieza y los desayunos tan abundantes han sido excelentes. En cuanto al lugar no tengo palabras para describir tantas maravillas juntas, bueno solo animaros a todo aquel que sea amante de la naturaleza que se anime. Gracias por todo Sonia
